What Is Aadhar Virtual ID?

Aadhar Virtual ID is a digital ID which can be generated temporarily, and it is a 16 digit number. Aadhar VID is mapped to your original Aadhar number, so you can give your temporarily generated Aadhar VID instead of giving your original Aadhar number. And it will do the job for you.

As the Aadhar VID is temporarily generatable, you can also revoke it and generate a new VID when you want. And as soon as you generate a new VID, the old one will not work for any requirement. That means, if anyone tries to record VID, you can easily regenerate it so the old recorded VID will become obsolete.

Unique Identification Authority of India has also said that, within few weeks, all the systems will start supporting Aadhar Virtual ID and then you can put it where it requires without having any fear of revealing your actual Aadhar Number in front of others. Your actual number will stay safe, and nobody can record that for unwanted usage.

You can also use the Aadhar Virtual ID to authenticate various transactions where needed, and eKYC can also be done with this VID. Nowadays, a lot of digital wallet providers such as Paytm, Google Tez, PhonePe, etc. tells you to complete the eKYC verification. You can easily use your Aadhar Virtual ID there to hide your actual number from them.

How To Generate Aadhar Virtual ID (VID) @ Uidai.Gov.in?

This is very simple and easy task to create an Aadhar Virtual ID for you. But it is mandatory to have your mobile number registered with your Aadhar card so that you can receive the one-time password (OTP) at the time of VID generation. If you don’t have your mobile number registered with Aadhar yet, you will not be able to do this. Below, we have described the steps to generate your Aadhar Virtual ID or VID:

  • First of all, make sure it’s registered with your number.
  • Then head over to the https://resident.uidai.gov.in official website of UIDAI.
  • There at UIDAI home page, you can see the VID generator under Aadhar Services column.

Aadhar VID generate

  • Click on it, and it will ask for your Aadhar number, security code, enter these correctly.
  • Complete the Captcha verification and click on Send OTP option.
  • Now, you will receive a one time password (OTP) on your phone number which is registered with your Aadhar card.
  • Enter this OTP on the “Enter OTP” field and choose “Generate VID” from the options given below that OTP field.
  • Finally, click on the green Submit button and that’s it.
  • You should receive your Aadhar Virtual ID or VID in your registered phone number via an SMS.

The Validity of a VID

You can repeat the same steps if you want to create another new VID and destroy the old VID. But as of now, the minimum validity period of a VID is one day. That means you need to wait for at least 24 hours to generate your new VID and expire the old one. But, do not think that destroying your old VID will also stop it working on where you used it previously. They will continue to work because VID passes your actual Aadhar number to the system blocking other persons to know it.

Where Can You Not Use Aadhar VID?

Though almost all the digital systems will start working with VIDs, there are some services where you still need to give your actual Aadhar number instead of your VID. Below you can see those applications:

  • Creating a new bank account.
  • To avail govt subsidies.
  • Application for tatkal passports.
  • To buy a new insurance policy.

But we hope UIDAI will also do something so that these important requirements also support Aadhar Virtual ID and stop revealing your actual Aadhar number while you are applying for these things.
